Christie's
The Dune Bible, estimate £250,000 - £350,000
The Dune Bible volume from Alejandro Jodorowsky’s epic unmade Dune project features in the Christie’s online-only Science Fiction and Fantasy sale (November 28 - December 12) which also includes vintage movie posters.
Pre-production work on the Dune movie based on Frank Herbert's original novels in the mid-1970s was done by leading comic artist Jean Giraud (also known as Moebius), British illustrator Chris Foss who illustrated many pocket edition covers including books by Isaac Asimov, and Swiss artist Hans Ruedi Giger. Together, they created the artistic direction of the entire project, designing costumes, vehicles and environments.
Jodorowsky and producer Michel Seydoux put together a thick, rectangular volume which has become known as The Dune Bible to generate interest from Hollywood studios. This promotional tool included reproductions of drawings made by Moebius, Foss and Giger, plus a near-complete storyboard of the movie. Christie's estimates that there are probably fewer than 10 surviving copies. It has an estimate of £250,000 - £350,000.
Other highlights include:
- the first drawings in the development of the cover art for Jurassic Park (estimate: £20,000-30,000)
- a first edition of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in a contemporary binding, with provenance linked to Jane Austen and Mary Wollstonecraft (estimate: £250,000 - £350,000)
- a first edition of Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (1499), recognized as the most important work of Renaissance fantasy (estimate: £120,000 - £160,000)
- a true first edition ofJ.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (estimate: £80,000 - £120,000)
- a first edition of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (estimate: £8,000 - £12,000)
The sale also features original artworks for the graphic novel adaptation of William Gibson’s Neuromancer (1989) (estimate: £40,000 - £60,000), the original dust-jacket artwork for the first edition of Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age (estimate: £20,000 - £30,000) and for the first edition of Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash (estimate: £200,000 - £300,000).
In addition there will be a selection of vintage movie posters including:
- a rare original US poster for the Cinerama release of Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 2001: A Space Odyssey (estimate: £6,000 - £9,000)
- the original 1933 film poster for King Kong (estimate: £25,000 - £35,000)
- an uncut printer’s proof of the poster from the first release of George Lucas’ 1977 Star Wars (estimate: £5,000 - £8,000)
