The secret plan to save Anthony Albanese from COVID

The Herald of the Sun and Sunday age spoke to seven senior Labor MPs about the other contingencies in place to try to manage the situation should the leader and campaign figurehead fall ill.

None would officially speak as they were not authorized to do so, but MPs confirmed the campaign had played war on what to do if Mr Albanese caught COVID.

Key shadow ministers including Richard Marles, Penny Wong, Jim Chalmers and Mark Butler will play a bigger role if Mr Albanese is sidelined, taking on the task of being the party’s chief spokesman on any given day , depending on what the problem might be.

Mr Albanese, if he feels well enough to do so, will host campaign events via video conference and possibly press conferences as well. And it’s also possible that a high-ranking MP, perhaps Mr Marles as his deputy, could take charge of the leader’s campaign plane and also take the traveling media pack with him.

As one MP put it, ‘we have been working through all the contingencies for some time now, as we have for budget week’.

“Morrison got it [COVID] but Albo didn’t, so that’s another wildcard in the campaign for us.

With the Prime Minister trailing the Leader of the Opposition in all opinion polls, any possible advantages – such as Mr Albanese not being able to campaign for a week – will be welcomed by Mr Morrison.

For Labor and its leader, COVID-19 is yet another risk to manage during the campaign.
